Law Enforcement/Visibility
The question on this hot topic is: “Which arrangement best serves the citizens of Indian Trail, not just for now, but in the future?”
Our current LAW ENFORCEMENT ARRANGEMENT with the Union
County Sheriff’s Office should be further assessed to determine if this is, in fact, the best use of our tax dollars in the provision of public safety. Given that Indian Trail is one of the largest towns in Union County (we may soon surpass Monroe), exploring this area now is extremely important, as we continue to grow and have already exceeded 25,000 residents.
Some thoughts to consider:
In our latest town survey…
- 90% of Indian Trail citizens wanted to increase our # of contracted deputies.
Indian Trail has well below the recommended number of law enforcement officials per capita. We have only about 2 deputies working during each shift at any given time, responding to all of Indian Trail’s 25,000+ residents.
- 78% of Indian Trail residents responded “yes” when asked if they were in favor of a Police Department
With this being said, it is apparent that the majority of Indian Trail residents do not feel our public safety needs are being met as well as they probably should be. Our present budget for public safety/law enforcement is $1.27 million year, which will soon provide for a total of 18 contracted deputies to cover all shifts. Considering our town has grown as much as it has, it is imperative from this point forward that we thoughtfully and purposefully seek to determine whether it is best to just continue to add more contracted Union County deputies, indefinitely, or to begin our own Police Department.
We must engage this topic and determine the most appropriate means of conducting such an analysis. Please read my write-up that addresses such an analysis, via the link below. It is crucial that we rely on a study that is conducted by a professional consultant who is experienced in law enforcement and skilled in such types of analyses, in order to draw any legitimate and unbiased conclusion. So again, the question is: “Which arrangement best serves the citizens of Indian Trail, not just for now, but in the future?”
